Meet The Team.

1. Why a solar geyser?
The solar geysers now being installed all over South Africa use solar radiation, the heat of the sun, to create energy. The solar geyser uses a “solar collector” in flat-plate or vacuum-tube format which is usually installed on the roof. The collector gets very hot very quickly and in turn heats yours water, either in a direct circulation system (in which the water runs through the collector and into the geyser tank) or in an indirect system (a special liquid flowing through the collector gathers the heat and transfers it to the geyser tank). Most solar geysers also have a back-up electric element that can be used on over-cast days, Eskom ‘s Andrew Etzinger says.

In all cases a timer is required “It’s necessary to ensure optimal functionality and together with the thermostat it controls the back-up electrical element. “Cobus Roux explains. He’s a manager at a country wide supplier of alternative energy

solutions. The timer is also needed to qualify for an Eskom subsidy. “You want to use your solar energy collector as far as possible to heat water during the day but you also want to make sure you have hot water whenever you need it. The timer will for instance make the back-up element kick in, in the early evening if the thermostat senses a last bit of heating is necessary. But it shouldn’t happen too often, depending on weather conditions.” Eskom says people should consider bathing at night to make use of the free energy collected during the day.

2. How a Solar geyser work?
With the continued power crisis and the increase in electricity rates, solar water heating is the best solution for South Africa households. A kwikot solar geyser can save up to 90% on your water heating costs. With a Kwikot, households will have enough hot water, even when the power is out.

3. How long should a Solar water geyser last?
Eskom says the expected life-span of a solar water heater is 10-20 years, depending on various factors. Some systems have a 10 year guarantee and a life expectancy of about 20 years. Etzinger says. The Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa says they know flat-plate systems that are still working after 27 years.

4. How hot is the water?
Most quality solar water heaters will hear water between 55 and 65 degrees Celcius, Eskom says. On a average cloudless day of solar radiation it will be 60 degrees plus, Ezinger says.

5. What happens when the sun doesn't shine?
Solar water heaters tanks are much better insulated than those of electric geysers and can therefore keep water hot longer, Eskom says. For occasions when the water temperature falls below the desired level most solar water heaters have a back-up electric element. Supplier Cobus Roux says technological advances have also made modern systems more effective, some can generate enough hear in overcast conditions. If solar water heaters work in London they’ll definitely work in S.A. Etzinger says. SA has some of the highest solar radiation levels in the world.

6. How long does it take to install?
Our dedicated installation teams can install a Kwikot solar heater in less than a day.
